My current set-up:

Paradigm speakers: (7.1 set-up)

Center: CC-170
Front L&R: Phantom
Surround: ADP 170 (I'm not sure. I just compared it with photos on the internet)
Rear: Stylus 170
Subwoofer: PDR10-v.4

Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR702

I've been using this 3 years now but I only recently realized that it's lacking detail in sound. Sound quality is not as clear as I thought it would be.

The receiver does not have HDMI yet. So maybe with a better a receiver, the speakers will sound better.

Guys and gals, I have some questions. I hope you can enlighten me.  ;D

Is my set-up good? I know it's in the low-mid end of HT speakers (according to the Paradigm rep. and online reviews). I'm not planning to replace my speakers. Sayang naman.

If I change my receiver to a newer model with HDMI. Will it have a huge difference in sound quality and, hopefully, giving me a clear and more detailed sound? (Baka naman nasa speakers yun? Kaya hindi masyado detalyado yung tunog?)

no expert here as im more into audio that ht.

what made you conclude that your system is not "good" (lacking in detail, not clear etc). i hope hindi dahil sa kababasa dito sa pdvd threads at di kaka-audition sa mga shops ;D  ::)

pasensiya sa tanong :)

^ yun nga eh  ;D that's why I asked.

Alam ko most folks are satisfied with their set-up until they audition gears in shops or from friends. :D

a receiver with hdmi will not necessarily sound better than one without. but maybe one with automatic equalization (audyssey, et.al.) could improve the overall sound balance.

your receiver has relatively beefy amps already. maybe you just have to optimize the settings and locations of your speakers.

How do you connect your movie player sa receiver mo? Dami akong nakitang mga AV/R na walang HDMI pero napakaganda tumunog. Naka-digital connection sila sa audio from player to AV/R..

Nope. I do not go to shops anymore. I just thought maybe the system could do so much better. I'm a real newbie, actually. I never had time to listen to music and watch movies on our HT until recently.

Haha! Actually ngayon lang ako nagpost ng seryoso tungkol sa set-up. Dati puro tungkol sa DVD's eh. Consider this as my first post.

Ah.. The guys who set up the receiver just worked on the volume on each speaker. Metering? Dunno. No equalizer too. (Maybe for the natural sound?)

Any suggestion how to optimize the setting?

Coaxial. Digital ba yun?

Check your room acoustics. Or baka naman gusto mo lang talaga mag-upgrade :)

Kung sana hindi na kailangan maglabas ng pera, e di mas ok. Sayang din yung mga binili.

Baka nga settings kailangan ayusin. Wala naman masyado nagalaw dun eh. Yung mga nagset-up parang sinalpak lang sa kwarto. By the way, yung room nagawa muna bago na-setup yung system. Sayang kung naisabay yun sa construction ng room, mas ok siguro yung acoustics. Ang ginawa na lang ay tinanggal na lang yung echo sa room.

Read around on how to optimize HT. You can DIY or ask some pros here to go to your house and do the job for you.

ito gusto ko malaman:

1. room -  size, condition/acoustics
2. sweetspot
3. player
4. speaker placement

kung mabiyayaan lang ako ng sapat ng pondo, uunahin ko muna ang room. subukan mo kayang ilipat muna sa ibang room yang gears mo? nakakapagod man pero kung may mapansin kang improvement then may problema ang current room mo. no need to hunt for a new avr. hdmi on avr? no need. i'd rather look for a receiver with more power. hth  ;)

Meron naman yatang auto calibrator itong 702. your rcvr looks pretty wicked.

wala yata brod. i think the idea of thx is you'll need thx certified speakers din para lahat pre-calibrated na.  ;) it doen't work in the real world though once the room acoustics start to bring havoc to your frequency response.  ;D

Kinalikot ko yung amplifier. Wala nga naka-set na calibration o kahit anong settings. Hindi ko rin nakita na ginamit yung optimizer.

But I'm gonna do what you have suggested. Thanks guys. Maybe correct EQ or settings should do the trick.

Paradigm din mga speakers at sub ko...pero hapi naman ako kahit walang HDMI at model 2001 pa preamp ko. kailangan lang tamang connection of your audio/vedio sources. Sa DVD or media players you need digital connection (optical/coaxial). Sa speaker settings you need to manually set distance & gain of each channel, meron naman yatang test tone yang AVR mo. search the net for guides sa speaker calibration. Actually, it's more fun & satisfying if you Do-It-yourselfe.  ;D

Yes, you have a good setup.  Maganda naman ang Paradigm and Onkyo, so it's either room acoustics, or personal preference na lang talaga ang difference.

How about a new AV receiver?  There's no guarantee that you'll be happy with the change, but at least you'll upgrade the features.  The time is right for HDMI capability.

Kung gusto mo yung medyo matapang na high frequencies (like me), try a Yamaha 667 or 867: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/rx/?mode=series

I'm looking for a Yamaha Aventage, but I can't find one anywhere: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/aventage/

Bro. you don't need to upgrade your current set up. just in case you have an hdtv and a blu ray dvd player. you can connectthe hdmi cable from the tv to blu ray, then use coaxial cable for digital audio output. and last you can have your speakers calibrated for optimum performance. by this time you'll be happy with your set up. look for Irwin at 5th.Ave. at sm north annex, then ask him about Karl.the guy who will calibrate your sysytem. God bless.

both your speakers and amps will have a great deal of effect on detail. as for the connectivity whether hdmi or not, i dont think so.

better speakers will help but that would entail a lot of cost.....there is no other way though. and the sad part is, you might also end up needing to replace your rxvr to realize the potential of your new speakers.
goodluck bro! enjoy!
