Receiver-Speaker Matching
« on: Nov 26, 2012 at 05:22 PM »
We need a thread like this for easy reference.

I'm no longer in the market for speakers, since I've already ordered Wharfe Diamond 10s, but I noticed that it's pretty tedious to have to search speaker and amp threads to get answers for a receiver-speaker match question.

Posters, don't worry about conflicting opinions, since that's expected.  Differences in opinion will come from differences in preference.  But unpredictable differences of opinion will probably come from differences in room acoustics.  Bahala na yung reader mag analyze at mag conclude.

What I have in mind is the convenience of having one go-to thread where it's easier to compare and analyze, rather than having to spend hours searching different threads.

==========================================

I have a Yamaha 700 series receiver, which used to be paired with Diamond 9s.  Loved the sound, but decided to sell the speakers after I noticed 3 broken grille pegs.

My buyer has a Pio 521.  Sabi ko, Yamaha would be the best match, but Pioneer would also be good.  My comment was based on my recollection of old posts with the same comment.  I've never sampled the combination before.

First question:  Was I correct in saying that Pio is good for Wharfe Diamond 9.5?

Ay salamat.  That's a relief, really.

^yes pioneer and wharfdale is an excellent match.

in my case, i have a Studio ACoustics floorstanders with a sensitivity of 90db, i was able to drive it with a 6LU8 12 watter tube amp, likewise with an EL34 pp amp of 35 watts per channel, the speaker was rated for 100 watts but i do not give much significance to the speaker wattage.....

This is good info.

Not good daw?  (not sure.)

OK nga ang ganon sir.  That's the kind of info I'm really looking for.

If we put more emphasis on specifics and technicalities, hindi rin naman matatapos yan. ;D

My experience was with Diamond 10's and pioneer and it sounded nice to me too.  Warm parin.  The Yammy - Wharf combination that I also had exprience with was a yamaha - modus one six na wharf.  That was also a nice warm combo.

For me, habang tumataas ang models ng mga receivers, it gets kinda easier to match because higher models tend to have better EQing/tweaking possibilities. Maski bright both ang receiver and speakers, with a powerful EQ, most often, it can be tamed. Kung mababa ang cut-off mo ng speakers, sensitivity and impedance would be an issue if you're going to use the receiver's amp.

Sa stereo listening naman, in the absence of EQ, mas-important ang proper matching.

Though generally warm talaga ang wharfs  :), hindi kaya warm pa din ang combination na yan is because of the auto calibration ng receiver?

My personal take,  tried onkyo608/709 with rega rs1 for music, and its wonderful. Detailed, refined, and warm! Also tried onkyo608/709 with LSA2 tower,  much better than rs1. Infinity and onkyo= balanced and neutral also.

My RTI's went well as well with my HK5500... Too bad it didnt went well when i upgraded my receiver to Yamaha.. It was ok in HT but too bright when it comes to music..

Wharfs and Yamaha are ok too
Wharfs and NAD ok too
PSB and Yamaha - winner for me..

Wharfs i used was the Diamond 8 series so i dont know how they compare with the 9's or 10's
Walang Setup

agree Master Nelson, actually napagusapan na namin ni Barrister ito and with receiver technology such as audessy, mcacc, and YPAO naapapadali na ang speaker - receiver matching kasi nahahabol na ng EQ.

very true, the higher the power rating of the receiver or amplifier the more types of speakers it can drive...

For their recent models, Yamaha or CA for me -- as long as you get a higher model AVR for higher model speakers. As with anything, YMMV. Listen before you buy.

For stereo listening, what's good to pair with Marantz? as mentioned, matching is really critical since most stereo amps don't have calibration software that can be used to adjust the sound.

Was planning to test it with Wharf and Mezzo since I haven't heard these pairs yet. I found the Polks a tad too bright when I paired it before with my HK amp. But i will listen to it with the Marantz.

Meron na ako Marantz stereo receiver and cdp. Probably  because the BS was designed as surround for a quadrosonic set-up for the Akai before.
