What would happen if you use two center and sub?
« on: Apr 24, 2006 at 10:05 AM »
Just want to know if anybody has experience doing this.
Using 2 center speakers as fronts instead of bookshelf then adding a sub for LFE.
Would this be good or bad?
Napansin ko lang kasi parang most speakers has a pricey center than a pair of fronts bookshelf.
A pair of bookshelf that cost 14K and a center that cost 10K same brand and model.
Is the center much better that the fronts (in delivering sound) kaya mas pricey sya?

Hindi advisable 2 centers as fronts like you said mahal tska wala masyado LFE center speaker unlike some bookshelf  they can handle kahit around 45hz.

2 centers as left and right using the B&W LCR (left, center & right) serieses, sounds better but pricey.
Audition first, if it fits your HT and audio preferences. Just my 2 cents  :)
Enjoy what you have!

sometimes Center Channel is more expensive,  since  the center would have 2 woofers and 1 tweeter compared to the matching Front with 1 woofer and 1 tweet, imho.. it could  perform better, since it has 2 woofers

Thanks guys.
Kaya pala mas mahal sya and I assume mas maganda tunog just add a sub to handle LFE.
Sana I've known this before I might have tried using two big center instead of a bookshelf.

if you are keen in using a pair of center speakers as fronts make sure they are LCR, dont fret just properly match your current speakers with your sub or get floorstanders.

You know I have an old receiver (Yamaha) with two speakers out as a center speakers.

By the way, since most of center speakers have two woofers it doesn't mean you don't need sub woofers?
In my opinion kaya most of the center speakers have two woofers first it easy to balance the speaker as center, this should spread symmetrically but there are cases that only one woofer like the kef & sonus solo, but their tweeter is on top of them which has more complicated cabinets.
2nd center speakers are really made to match floor stander speakers & bookshelf are for sorround

There are speakers designed the same with the center like the THIEL CS series. They are D'Apolito principle, two woofer one center tweeter which can be place vertical or horizontal.

just my personal opinion

I don't know bro but isn't the reason why the D' Appolito arrangement is usually utilized is to give the speaker a wider dispersion perpendicular to the axis the drivers are arranged along? So like with center speakers na nakahiga and the drivers are arranged in a horizontal D' Appolito configuration, it's supposed to have a wider vertical dispersion. Likewise with floorstanders that have the vertical D' Appolito, the dispersion is wider along the horizontal axis, right? That's why I don't believe that the reason why centers have two woofers on the side is because of balance. But I'm always willing to be enlightened, bro. And I think you would still need subs even if your speakers system had dual woofers, since the subs are meant for the distinct purpose of reproducing very low frequencies which bookshelfs and floorstanders with smaller woofers would have a hard time reproducing fairly well. Subs are supposed to relieve the sattelites of that burden so that they perform better and with less distortion.  ;D ;D ;)

I see no problem with the set-up you have in mind.  A Coinicident speaker series have surround speakers identical to the D'Appolito config of its center speaker. Only difference, they're not magnetically shielded.  Apart from the added woofer, this shielding also accounts for the more expensive center speakers in some series.
