Warner Says Blu-ray Comments "Misquoted and Misconstrued"

Nearly a week after a Warner VP appeared to indicate otherwise, the studio told High-Def Digest that it has no plans to cease its dual-format stance, pledging a strong line-up for both Blu-ray and HD DVD in 2008.

News that Warner was eying a change in its high-def strategy spread like wildfire last week, following a story in industry trade Home Media Magazine that included a series of comments attributed to Warner VP of High-Definition Media Dan Silverberg at last week's Blu-ray Festival in Los Angeles.

"One thing that may be changing is our strategy," Silverberg was quoted as saying. "When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide -- so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating."

Silverberg reportedly followed up his remarks by citing strong Blu-ray sales for the studio's top-selling '300' release, saying that "we can definitely talk Blu-ray" and that Warner is "committed to the format," a set of comments that seemed to suggest that the studio was considering a move to exclusive support of the Blu-ray format.

Following several days of breathless speculation from fans and industry insiders alike, Warner is now breaking its silence on the matter, referring to Silverberg's remarks as having been "misquoted and misconstrued."

Speaking with High-Def Digest, Jim Noonan, SVP of Strategic Promotion and Communication for Warner Home Entertainment Group said "I can tell you that Warner's position has not changed, and I know that Dan did not intend to suggest that wasn't the case. We support both formats and we have made no decision to alter that policy, nor are there any such announcements coming, or being planned."

As for speculation that the studio is waiting for Q4 sales results before making an announcement of format exclusivity -- perhaps even as soon as this January's CES in Las Vegas -- Noonan shot down any such short-term scenarios.

"Like any major company, we are always reviewing our strategies in every aspect of our business, it is what smart companies do. I can't say what may happen five, ten years down the line. But right now, Warner Bros. has made no decision to change course. We are still onboard with both formats, and will continue [with a strong line-up of new releases and catalog titles], just as we have in the past in supporting HD DVD and Blu-ray."

Universal Brings 'The Kingdom' to HD DVD this December

The high-octane political thriller 'The Kingdom' is headed to high-def as a feature-packed HD DVD/DVD combo release.

Starring Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner as members of an FBI team solving a terrorist bombing in Saudi Arabia, the film was received with mixed reviews upon its theatrical release in late September, but it'll be getting the red carpet treatment when it makes its HD DVD debut on December 26, day-and-date with the standard-def DVD.

Announced supplements are extensive, with all versions sharing an audio commentary with director Peter Berg, four featurettes ("Creating the Kingdom," "History of the Kingdom," "Constructing the Freeway Sequence," "Surveillance") and deleted scenes. Exclusive to the HD DVD will be a U-Control-enabled picture-in-picture video commentary, plus additional web-enabled content (details to be announced).

Tech specs include 1080p/VC-1 video and audio tracks in both Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 surround.

Universal has set a suggested retail price for HD DVD/DVD combo version of $39.98.

'Dragon Wars' to do Battle on Blu-ray

Sony has announced that the South Korean sensation 'Dragon Wars' will roar on Blu-ray day-and-date with the DVD this January

Though a critical and commercial flop stateside, 'Dragon Wars' was a huge box office hit in South Korea and some other international territories. Hoping to reverse its fortunes in the US, Sony will give the CGI-heavy fantasy film another shot on video when it debuts the film January 8 on both Blu-ray and DVD.

Announced extras are identical to both formats, with the fairly slim package including the "500 Years in the Making" featurette, a set of "Dragon Wars Animatics" and a photo gallery.

Tech specs for the Blu-ray include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround tracks in English and French.

How's the sale of "The Host" in the US? I guess, with that on mind. Dragon Wars  will suffer the same fate.

Paramount Reveals 'Stardust' HD DVD Specs, Cover Art

The big-budget fantasy-adventure 'Stardust' will be hitting HD DVD with plenty of supplemental features, but no high-res audio.

As we've previously reported, last month Paramount announced a December 18 high-def debut for 'Stardust,' day-and-date with the standard DVD. Now the studio has revealed specs for the Claire Danes/Robert De Niro/Michelle Pfeiffer flick, which despite a disappointing run at the box office this summer will get the full special edition treatment in its next-gen debut.

Extras are set to include the documentary "Good Omens: The Making of 'Stardust'" (in HD), a collection of five Deleted Scenes, a Blooper Reel, and the film's original Theatrical Trailer (also in HD).

Tech specs boast 1080p video (codec TBA), but the studio is once again eschewing high-res audio, releasing the disc with English, French and Spanish tracks in Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 Surround only (1.5mbps).

'The Invasion' Coming to HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc

Warner Home Video has announced The Invasion, the Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, will be released January 8 on Combo Format HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The high definition release is day-and-date with the standard DVD debut.

The Invasion will be presented in widescreen 1.85:1 1080p video and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless audio on both high definition home video formats. The HD DVD will also include a secondary Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 track, while the Blu-ray version will offer a Dolby Digital 5.1 track.

Warner has chosen not to include any high definition exclusive supplemental features so everything found on the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc will be identical to whats found on the standard DVD. Those features includes;
We've Been Snatched Before: Invasion in Media History Documentary; and three featurettes: A New Story, On the Set, and Snatched.

Toshiba and DreamWorks Animation Launch HD DVD Ads for 'Shrek The Third,' Proving High Def Picture Quality is Not 'Far Far Away'

WAYNE, N.J. (Map) - WAYNE, N.J., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba") and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. (NYSE: DWA) announced today the launch of a new creative advertising campaign to support the release of "Shrek the Third," in high definition, exclusively on HD DVD. The TV ads spotlight the outstanding picture quality of the HD DVD version of the film and reinforce the consumer benefits of watching movies on HD DVD.

The 30 second TV commercials use the much-loved characters Donkey and Gingerbread Man, who discuss with studio execs how life-like they become when viewed on HD DVD. Currently airing, the two TV ads will run during network prime time and on several cable outlets. The ads incorporate the tagline "It all begins with HD," to convey that DVD is taken to the next level with HD DVD.

"Because our films are created digitally, the best way to watch "Shrek the Third" is on HD DVD," said Ann Daly, Chief Operating Officer of DreamWorks Animation. "With our films now in this format, families can get the highest quality viewing experience on their home televisions in HD."

"Shrek the Third," hitting shelves November 13, is another example of the great exclusive titles coming to HD DVD this holiday season. A family favorite, the movie features the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, all brought to life with HD DVD's high definition video and superior audio. The film also offers content exclusive to HD DVD such as Picture-in-Picture features, customizable character menu skins and web-enabled network features like Shrek's Trivia Track, The World of Shrek and Donkey's Digital Coloring Book. Only HD DVD can provide this type of content with currently available hardware and software.

We should be happy that there is a format war.   Do you think we will be enjoying this promotional stuff (slashed hardware prices, BOGO) if there is only 1 format??  It turned out, having HD DVD and Blu-ray in fold benefits consumers.  CE companies and studios are quick to react to competitor strategies.

Blu-ray dampened the "Transformers" HD DVD launch with BOGO deals.  Now they are doing it again, this time to match up with HD DVD's $99 player deals.   This is great stuff for consumers!!!   ;D ;D

can I clear the offer properly.

It says on top of the list: "A limited time offer: Choose one of these great movies & TV series on Blu-ray and get another one from this selected list for free."

So does this mean we can choose new titles from the main page and choose a free title from the list provided in this link: Buy One Blu-ray Disc, Get One Free

medyo naguluhan lang ako dun sa offer nila.  ???

Anyway, up to when yung promo nila?

Many thanks.  :D

Ramil, it says "choose one & get another one from this selected list for free." Meaning you must choose/select all your buy/free titles from the list NOT buy from the main page & select the free title from the list. :)

Basically all you need to do is just open the list & tick those title boxes you want to buy & add them into the cart. :)

HD DVD 51GB is now official:

Quote
Toshiba's been demoing a triple-layer hybrid HD DVD / DVD system for a couple years now, but it's been all unofficial until today, when the DVD Forum steering committee voted to approve the spec as part of the official HD DVD standard. The third 15GB layer bumps the total capacity of HD DVD up to 51GB, matching Blu-ray's 50GB disks. Of course, we wouldn't expect to see a flood of content on the new disks anytime soon, what with all those shiny new double-layer players getting sold right now, but it's interesting to see HD DVD step up in the one area Blu-ray was clearly superior. The stalemate continues!

Disney voted and approved the 51GB Triple Layer DVD:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia/display/20071119150942_Disney_Votes_for_51GB_HD_DVD_Media_Approval.html

Am i smelling disney movies as early as 2nd quarter of next year? Since they were one of the co-author of the HDI in HD DVD, i won't be suprise to finally see them in HD territory. Since their main reason for leaving HD DVD was the lack of space. But with disney casting their vote, its a matter of time now to finally see there movies in HD DVD camp.
