Skylark,
crossovers are important if you'll be using 2 or more different speaker drivers. For instance, you'll need a 2 way crossover for a combination tweeter-woofer; a three way crossover for a tweeter, midrange, woofer combo.... so on. The reason for using a crossover network is that this serves as a filter circuit, so that the correct frequency band will be directed to the correct speaker driver. For instance, tweeters are generally used for high frequency signals, thus the crossover network for the tweeter will let the high frequency pass thru but blocks of the low frequencies.... same with the woofer, the same network blocks off the high frequency signals but lets the low frequency pass thru.
There are many crossover network designs, depending on your requirement. It's hard to explain w/out the graphs but I'll try to post some links for you to better understand the 2nd order, 3rd order....
Dai-ichi also sells crossover networks, and it's cut off frequencies were based on their own drivers. Yes, if you're not too picky about Dai-ichi, you can use them (I already made a few speakers for my friends using Dai-ichi drivers and networks.)
Hope this helps.
