Acoustic Energy BS goes best with what tube?
« on: Feb 06, 2008 at 06:42 PM »
Guys, question... I thinking of what tube characteristic is best for my speaker... here's its review

http://stereophile.com/loudspeakerreviews/239/index1.html

basically, the speaker has good imaging, vifa tweets, nice bass. it excels in fast tempo music... tight bass and highs... mids are very clear and straightforward, but I feel it lacks width...  the review says otherwise but my ears say different...using it now with a dared mp5. I going to try it out with a bigger tube amp... what tubes do I use?

1) use an el84 to further enhance its traits

2) use a kt88 to make it richer

3)use an el34 and focus on improving the mids

I paired my no longer with me AEGIS One  with the following amps.

Scott 299D,   PP 7591 tube.. sound too warm for dynamic music and drum test tracks,  but very good for female vocals and light jazz.  if you like Percussions stay away from the Scott 299D

Scott St70-II, PP el34 -  more dynamic presentation than the Scott 299 D

Marantz Vintage integrated .. very "dynamic" presentation in a bookshelf sense, ganda sa drum test tracks !!!

The AEGIS one is a very forgiving loudspeaker, Colored ? YES, but depending on the coloration that you like, this could be perfect speaker for you.... it was perfect for me at the time (Small room). Slight hump  on the bass and a bit rolled highs.. makes partnering with SS amps easier and near field listening is not too fatiguing...

Will eventually get one in the future when budget permits for a second system

Which amp to get.. really depends on the music you listen too... as the saying goes, jack of all traits, master of none... unless you really go high high end.
