this seems like a sensible player so far from spec and review, would anyone know if this can play mkv files yet?

Up to 1920x1080 native MPEG-2, AVCHD, MKV and DivX/XviD video support; JPEG and PNG picture support.

It looks like i might send back my oppo for an upgrade with there SE edition for a mere $299.

Just in case for the people that are not familiar with the new Sabre Dac, the new DAC are the ones being use by Macintosh and other high end Audiophile equipment.

Wow! Congrats on your upgrade to SE SirLaw11. Please do share with us your impressions using the analog connection with the new SABRE DAC. Is it a great improvement as compare with using the HDMI connection? Looks like it will match well with a Marantz Receiver being analog its known strength.

Howabout DVD playback, is it region free already?

Thanks

I would definitely give you guys an update on the analog section of this player since that is the reason why i took the upgrade. If owners of 83SE or 83NF were any indication, then that means i am in for a very good ride. Right now the 2 channel of the 83SE/83NE based on the observations of people owning both BDP-09FD and the BDp-83SE/NE is far more superior than the wolfson dac in the elite bluray. Most likely i will be doing HDMI video only and multichannel for my audio and let the player do the decoding =) I have a couple of SACD and DVD-A to test with. AS far as dvd playback being region free, there is a mod that you can do to make it region free. But since i dont have a lot of foreign movies and it will void my warranty i would not risk it.

There is another upgrade that i might do base on Nuforce mod. If there is a discern difference between the 83SE amd the Nuforce version then i might. I am just waiting right now for a concrete head to head of both unit.

Here is the website of the Nuforce version of there BDP-83:

Just a quick question for this Oppo, does it need to have a hardware modification to be region-free on BD & DVD?

Just a quick question for this Oppo, does it need to have a hardware modification to be region-free on BD & DVD?

Meron pong software and hardware mod.  See below link:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-ray-players/1030215-oppo-bdp-83-owners-thread-all-regions.html

I'm currently using the software mod for firmware version 430 and its working naman po.

Pero, I'll be trying a hardware mod so I can load newer firmwares from Oppo without doing the software mod everytime, such as this one:

http://www.bluraychip.dk/product.php?id_product=10

I hope this helps.

After testing this out for a couple of days since i received it from oppo, all i can say is WOW. I could have never imagine that for a mere $299 upgrade it can sound as good as MCD500. And with the recent firmware update, it gave me an LG GUI complete with BluTV. With that firmware upgrade, it introduced better clarity from high to mid to low not to mention better bass. All these listening was done using 2 channel of the BDP83SE using downmix stereo as my configuration. I've tried to listen to some redbook cd and it continues to amazed me. I thought i was done listening to them but after playing them thru BDP83SE, i guess i will be dusting my redbook cd collection.

As far as multi channel is concern. I have'nt tested the analog multichannel yet since i am still busy with work, but once i become free i will add my own assessment of its multichannel capability. But if the 2 channel is any indication, i am in for a wonderful ride. Right now i am listening to Linda Ronstadt & The Nelson Riddle Orchestra for my final listening pleasure tonight.

Until then....

Has anyone tried connecting a 1TB or more usb storage on your BDP-83?  I can't seem to find anyone from the internet, even avsforum, that specified how much capacity of usb storage have they connected it with.  Haven't tried Oppo customer service though.

E-mailed Oppo a few minutes ago and got their response already:

The player supports FAT16 and FAT32 filesystems. We have tested drives up to 1.5TB in size without any issues as long as the main logical partition is FAT32.

As for brands, we generally recommend Seagate or Western Digital.

I read somewhere in AVForum that the hardware of the current BDP-83 couldn't support 3D, so I guess they'll be releasing a 3D-capable player.  As for MKV playback, also from AVForum, they had to make chunks of 4Gig MKV files which is FAT32's file size limit.

Usually they refer to "universal players" when the unit can play almost all known audio and video formats. Region-free if it can read all dvd/bluray region disks.  Oppo isn't region-free, it's Region A for bluray and Region 1 on dvd.  However, there are hardware and software mods that were developed, outside Oppo, that can make it region-free for dvd and region-selectable on bluray.
