Full Range Alnico for Car Audio
« on: Aug 25, 2013 at 12:04 PM »
Hi sirs,

I've had this nagging project I wanted to do but I wanted to check first if it's advisable.
In a normal car audio 3-way setup, you'd have the midbass, midrange and tweeters.
I think(?) in a Loud and Clear setup, setting up Raw Drivers would mean an 8-10 inch midbass,
an 8-10 inch midrange and bullet type tweeters. I was thinking I could replace the "midrange" raw
driver to an Alnico full range set of speakers. They are quite inexpensive now as compared to car
audio brands. Here are my questions:

1) Is it a waste of time as crossover settings will eventually cancel out the "full range" purpose and instead treat it as a "midrange"?

2)Is the Alnico built to withstand door pod installation and the constant jarring due to road use?

3) Will it be able to match the loudness of the raw driver beside it when placed side by side in a door pod?

4) Do I need an enclosure in my door pod to make this work?

My goal here is to go louder and clearer. I've heard full range Alnico's belt out vocals with such depth and precision that I wanted to replicate that in my car. I would want to imagine that if done right, I can have that same full bodied sound emanating from my car.

AAudio has the Alnico's for sale and since they manufacture them, they can tweak it for car audio use. There just a question on the "ohms" load which could be rectified by amplifier bridging. Here's the link to the parts thread: http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php/topic,164541.0.html and here's the speaker in question:

8-inch Full Range
50-100 Watts
39 hz to 19 khz
parameter 39 hz
Vas 79.9L
Qts 0.2
Qes 0.26
Qms 3.88
Re 7.4 ohms
Le 0.35 mh
Spl 94.6 db
PHP TBD

Thank you in advance for your expert opinions.

They may be based on the Visaton BG20 drivers. In which case the cone is made from paper pulp. Doors will get moisture.

That said, these drivers can be used as open baffles too so a car door might be ok. Since you cannot control enclosure size, tsambahan sa response.

When it comes to it being in a 2-3 way setup, consider speaker sensitivity. Dapat matched. otherwise you will have linearity problems. Hindi pantay ang tonal balance as you change your HU vol level.

Hear it first (8") as standalone stereo speakers on your doors. I suspect they will sound good as is. If it sounds good, I recommend adding tweeters or super tweeters. You wont be getting enough left speaker top end because you are listening way off the ideal dispersion pattern.

I am thinking the same thing. BG20 or BG17. T-amp. Super tweeters. Active sub if needed. iPhone or Note as source. Forget imaging he he. Been there done that. Tonal balance na lang.
