LG's "Panel Lottery"
« on: Jul 22, 2011 at 11:03 AM »
I've been reading some interesting info from another forum (avsforum) which I came to know from a link post from another member here.

It seemed LG, like Samsung, is not using a single definite source for its panels.

People who prefer the S-IPS panels for it's wider viewing angle and less lag might be disappointed to know he has the other types of panels and not the S-IPS he prefers.

For the 2011 models of LG (specifically the LK450 models), it seemed there's a way to identify the panels used by the serial number, example:

32LK450-UA.ACCYLUR

The fourth letter from the right/last character should be a Y. They say 2010 models like the LD460s should have a "W" on the other hand, but this year it's a "Y".

If it's a D, it's not an S-IPS panel. If it's a "Y", it could be.

The next step is looking at the pixels very closely via what they call "Loupe test" (looking at the screen with a magnifying glass.

If the pixels are arranged like <<< or what they call similar to Chevron's logo, it's confirmed to be S-IPS panel. (look at image)

So I'm hoping that with this thread, we can be guided as to what type of panels are in the Philippine Market.

Good post. I looked into this before buying. Here is what I have found so far. This was a larger problem with the 2010 models. 2011 models does not seem to be much of an issue.

The models in the Philippines use the same numbering scheme as those elsewhere in the world. Be aware and check before opening the box though. The SKU number will be there for you to check. No need to open the box. I bought a 42LK450. The number on the box was:
42LK450-UB.APHYLJD . The UPC symbol is below that with a bunch of numbers but ends in YLJD. Your SKU could be different but the Y is one way of telling. BTW the pixels are VERY small. I used a magnifying glass to confirm and I have a S-IPS panel. I looked at the display models at SnS and Anson's both had S-IPS models on display.

The S-IPS panels offer faster response times and larger viewing angles.

Based on the LG 2011 catalog found at its Indonesia page

Page
http://www.lg.com/in/common/product/support.jsp?localeCd=in&productId=32LK450&uri=/in/tv-audio-video/lcd-tv/LG-32LK450.jsp

Catalog
http://www.lg.com/in/tv-audio-video/images/LG%203D%20Catalogue%20May%202011%20FINAL.pdf

For LK450 and LK430, only 42 in. models have ips panels

Not sure as posts in the avsforum state some got 32" with IPS panels.

anyway the catalog states that "*except 32"  so that means the 37" van also be with IPS.

anyway, LG seems to release different iterations and models within a region.

example, in the LED LV series, the Philippines seem to not have the 37LV3500 but other countries have it and not the 32" variant.

anyway, just do the Y and Loupe test to confirm.

Guys I took a macro shot of my 32LK430's screen. It does have a Y in the model number too.
Can I safely assume it's an IPS panel?
Pero I have to say: My old Samsung 32R81 actually had slightly smoother response time (less blur/ghosting).
