altec lansing gt 5051
« on: Jan 19, 2006 at 03:09 PM »
hello!

i recently bought an altec lansing gt-5051 and i'm quite happy with it's performance in my small room. it's a true 5.1 system using side-firing dipole system that serves as the surrounds. it plays dolby systems well but not dts.

just a quick question....

the gt5051 only has analog inputs... there are no digital audio inputs... can i use a decoder to act as a go between? i mean is there something i could connect to the optical/coaxial out of my dvd player and the analog inputs of the gt5051?

if yes, can you guys recommend 1 or several models?

thanks

You need a dvd player w/ built-in decoders.

hello bumblebee,

thanks for replying. let me try to give a more graphic description.

my jvc dvd player displays the dts logo on its face. it has analog stereo outs and coax/digital out. it doesn't have the usual 5.1 outs found on generic players. this means it can decode and play dts if my speaker system has a coax/digital input.

the AL gt5051 does not have coax/digital input. only 2(red & white) rca inputs. and green, black and orange inputs used to connect to pc sound cards.

paraphrasing my original question, what will it take for me to enjoy dts on such a system? is there a device that can act as a go between? to connect coax/digital out of the dvd player to the analog ins of the gt5051.

thanks again!

Hi kaitan.

Meron namang mga preamp/processors available kaya lang mahal. Costs much, much more than your DVD player + Altec Lansings. Receivers have processors kaya lang mahal din sila. Pinakamura na yung generic DVD player w/ decoders.

Also, your player probably decodes DTS and output it in stereo.

thanks bumblebee... i guess i'll stay with dolby till my next buy :)

am waiting for logitech's z5450... a version of the z5500 but with wireless rear speakers. that's my priority nowadays... wireless surround. i don't like the idea of running wires through my room.

pioneer has some wireless models but i'll have to compare them against the z5450.

for those interested, check them out:

vergel,

i use this mostly for watching dvd movies. for a small room, ok na siya. the sounds and crisp and it looks very sleek.

if you're looking for a space-saving 5.1 system, this is good.

tell me before u buy... i might come up with a better offer  ;D

am waiting for a new set.... when it arrives, i'll have to get rid of the al gt5051...  ;)
