Oldboyracers HT build
« on: Oct 14, 2013 at 10:20 PM »
Hi all,
I thought I would start this thread early so I could show the build from bare land to the finished theater. My house build is 27 days old & scheduled for around 5 months, I shall post piccies when I figure out how to do that. All my gear is in the UK waiting to be shipped as soon as my residents visa is approved. That's the introduction out of the way now down to the interesting stuff.
The HT room will be 7.5 x 5.5 M & 2.9 M high, the length should have been 8.5 M but due to a slight misunderstanding with the architect had to compromise. I shall be building a room within a room so the final internal dimensions will be 7.12 x 5.12 M & 2.73 high. Still in the design stage but there will be 2 rows of 3 seats the 2nd row on a raised plinth & a stage. I have bought the seats, saw them in Mandaue Foam, they wouldn't hold them so it was an early purchase. The screen mount is causing a headache at the moment, trying to design a mount, the screen weighs 120 KG.
My gear :-
HT :-
Screen - 120" Elite EZframe
Projector - Epson EH-TW8300
AV Pre amp/tuner - Marantz AV7703
Amps - Emotiva XPA 5 & XPA 6 Gen 3

Android TV box - HiMedia Q10 Pro with 6TB hard drive,
Subwoofer Equalizer - Anti Mode 8033C

IQ30  Rear surrounds, high fronts & rears
                          IQ8ds  surrounds
                          IQ60C  center
Subwoofer - BK Monolith
Line Conditioner x 2 - Richard Gray 400 Pro
AVR - 10KVA Stavol ST-10000VA-ST
Stereo :-
Pre Amp - Emotiva XSP-1
Main Amp - Emotiva XPA-DR2
CD/Network player - Marantz ND8006
Turntable - Technics SL-QL1 & Technics SL-1200 mk6 (highly modified)

Yeah I know... But just would like to suggest a bigger display since sir oldboyracer's room size is quite big, a bigger display probably 120" to 140" would definitely make a difference :)

Thanks Louie, unfortunately not thinking about a projector just yet. I like the idea of the larger screen but I think I will wait till the PQ improves. The 4K PJ's sound good but I have not had the chance to see one yet. The HT build will allow such an upgrade in the future

Sir Oldboyracer,
Have you seen in action any Panasonic, Epson, JVC or Sony Projectors?
Even at just 1080p Full HD, the PQ is very very good paired with a proper PJ screen and well controlled room lighting :)

Thanks JH, yes a fellow KEF lover, my ears really appreciate their unique sound. BTW I auditioned a pair of 205/2's for 2 weeks in my living room back in the UK, absolutely awesome, the 203/s's were not bad either. I found a slight lack of bass for my liking but that could have been alleviated by a sub. Listening to Mark Knofflers fingers sliding up & down the strings of his guitar was amazing. In the end I settled for the performance 6's due to the amount of time I had to get my gear to the shippers. Maybe a future upgrade would be 207's for the stereo & get the rest of the Performance series for the HT - Xmas present hehe !

Thanks Mykel, I also can't wait for the build, I've been without my HT & Stereo for 7 months now.
The only pictures you'll get for the next few months will be the HT room gradually being built. I will will try & lay the thread out as a sort off instruction manual for those who are interested in sound proofing & acoustic treatments.

Hi Louie, I've been spending too much time flying backwards & forwards to Cebu over the last 18 months (including getting married in May) to look at PJ's. Since deciding to relocate to Cebu last Xmas I made some upgrades & having seen the 85" Panny fell in love with it (don't tell the wife hehe !)especially when they agreed a P900K discount. Everything was a bit of a rush & I think I'll be happy with what I have for a little while.
The HT build will allow me add a PJ at a later date. The Panny will be mounted 1M from the front wall so if a large screen is installed I will have extra distance to the seating to play with for adjustment.

just curious, how is your electricity bill? I checked the specs of the 85" Panasonic and noticed that its power consumption is high.

Hi DTNS, yes your right the screen draws 1200W but saying that the 3 amps are also rated at 1200W & Av Receiver 1160W. Compared with the UK the HT will increase by 780W, the Stereo by 1200W as it is unlikely that both systems will be running together. Although your electric supply here is expensive it's comparable to the UK which I am used to. When I get my first bill in around 6 months I'll let you know.

Congrats oldboyracer! Your system is a blast just by reading your list of gears. I hope to audition it sometime.

Actually that was also my initial thought. But considering the value of his gears, i don't think oldboyracer would concern himself with electricity bills compared to his pure enjoyment. I'd choose an 85" plasma anytime over any PJ projecting at 100". Iba pa din ang direct lighting ng monitor/tv vs reflected light ng Pj screen. But I guess that's just me. I've experienced an 85" projected screen dati and very considerable na ang size talaga. What more ang plasma.

Size does matter. Installed both 90" and 80" led tv and yes
Its vivid but still less awesome compared to
120" sized screen imho lang naman. For oldboys room size a 120-140" screen is in order hahahah
