‘The Boys’ Spinoff Nears Series Order at Amazon, Lizze Broadway and Jaz Sinclair Join Cast

“The Boys” spinoff at Amazon is nearing a series order. In addition, Lizze Broadway and Jaz Sinclair have joined the ensemble cast.

The project was first announced as being in development in September. Set at America’s only college exclusively for young adult superheroes (and run by Vought International), the untitled series is described as an irreverent, R-rated show that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities.

Broadway will play the role of Emma, a young superhero. Her past TV credits include “The Rookie,” “Bones,” “Southland,” “Splitting Up Together,” and “Here and Now.”

Sinclair will play Marie, another of the young superheroes. She most recently starred in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” at Netflix. Her credits prior to that include “Rizzoli & Isles,” “Easy,” and “The Vampire Diaries.”

Like “The Boys,” the spinoff will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios. Craig Rosenberg will serve as the showrunner and executive producer under his overall deal with Sony. He is currently a writer and executive producer on “The Boys.”

‘The Boys’ Spinoff Series a Go at Amazon With New Showrunners

The Boys spinoff is moving forward at Amazon.

The retail giant/streamer has handed out series order for its college-set spinoff from Eric Kripke’s breakout superhero drama. As part of the pickup, Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters — who previously oversaw ABC Marvel drama Agent Carter — have boarded the untitled series as showrunners. The longtime writing duo take over for Craig Rosenberg, who departed the drama following creative differences with Amazon and producers Sony Pictures TV.

In the works for more than a year, the untitled series is set at America’s only college exclusively for young-adult superheroes (run by Vought International). It’s described as an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive superheroes as they put their physical, sexual and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. It’s part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire, and raunch of The Boys.

Jaz Sinclair (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Lizze Broadway (Here and Now), Shane Paul McGhie (Unbelievable), Aimee Carrero (Elena of Avalor), Reina Hardesty (Brockmire) and Maddie Phillips (Teenage Bounty Hunters) will play the young superheroes. Additional castings are expected to be announced later.

Aimee Carrero & Shane Paul McGhie Exit ‘The Boys’ Spinoff

Aimee Carrero and Shane Paul McGhie, who had been cast as leads of Prime Video’s college-set spinoff of The Boys, have departed the YA series.

According to sources, Carrero and McGhie’s departures stemmed from a variety of factors, including the long process to get the spinoff to production with the actors attached for over a year while other acting opportunities presented themselves, as well as changes from the original version of the project the actors had signed up for. (For instance, I hear the character McGhie was tapped to play has undergone a significant creative evolution.)

Both roles as young superheroes in The Boys spinoff will be recast. It is possible that McGhie plays another character in The Boys universe in the future.

Chance Perdomo Joins ‘The Boys’ Spinoff On Prime Video In Recasting

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina alum Chance Perdomo is set as a lead in Prime Video’s college-set spinoff of The Boys. He will play a young superhero alongside previously announced Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Reina Hardesty and Maddie Phillips.

Perdomo replaces Shane Paul McGhie, who, along with Aimee Carrero, recently exited the series. As Deadline reported, the character has undergone creative changes under new showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, so this is not a straight recasting.

Prime Video is yet to release a premiere date for Gen V, its anticipated superhero college spinoff series, which will launch this year. While it’s early for a renewal decision, I hear the streamer is happy with the first season, and a writing room is starting soon in anticipation of a Season 2 pickup. It will be led by executive producer Michele Fazekas, who I hear will serve as sole showrunner.

Fazekas was co-showrunner on Season 1 alongside her longtime writing partner Tara Butters who I hear is taking a break from the business for some family time. The separation was amicable, and Butters intends to return to writing-producing at some point in the future, I hear.

During a recent appearance at the Creation New Orleans fan convention, Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles has confirmed that he will be reprising his fan-favorite role as Soldier Boy in Amazon’s upcoming The Boys spin-off Gen V. Ackles revealed that his upcoming appearance on the college-set superhero series will be part of the show’s many surprise cameos.

“Soldier Boy pops up for a brief moment in this new spin-off of The Boys,” Ackles said (via EW). “In fact, there’s a few cameos from the mothership that come into this spin-off. My little bit there was heavily [improvised].”

Watched Episode 1 last night. So far, as bloody good, twistedly funny and depraved as The Boys. Maybe the characters are not as immediately compelling as those in the original series, but this is just the first episode, so I'm giving room for them to grow on me.
