I've compared my 983 to an XDE500. You will be impressed by the XDE especially considering the price difference (x4). On my Pio Kuro 428 anyway, panalo siya sa upscaling as if Toshiba implemented all its HD-DVD knowhow or employed some superior software algorithm to achieve a sharper image. Color palette and naturalness of lighting was another matter however but then, YMMV.

XDE500 have more detailed images as compared to the oppo. As boss lithium said.... results may "vary" on the display and taste of the viewer. Like I said... sa details... panalo ang toshiba and PQ!

I used a Maxent 42" when it was tested. I think lithium have a pioneer panel 42" also.

anybody tried comparing the PQ of the toshiba xde500 with x524 resolution of mkv downloaded files (either played on htpc , wdtv, popcorn or egreat)? tia

i dont think it will compare. i think the pq of the mkvs will still be superior than upscaled dvd. kahit oppo 983 pa ang magupscale ng dvd. imho.

i have seen a pioneer 600 series upscale (696 and 600) and i think the 610 has the same mediatek upscaling chip inside. and during the last shoot out regarding upscalers. the oppo 980 easily beat the pioneer 600 series of dvd player. so basing on the observation of other members here that the xde is slightly better or equal to the oppo 980. i think the xde will be better than the pioneer.

oppo 980 > pio 600 series
oppo 980 < or = tosh xde

therefore

tosh xde > pio 600 series

but of course a straight comparo would be better.

i'd have to agree with brader iiinas on this.
