paolorenzo's humble setup
« on: Apr 15, 2007 at 10:38 AM »
Finally have the opportunity to show my gears.  ;D  Puro entry-level nga lang.  :-[  It's not a dedicated HT room, but rather I placed it in the 2nd floor family room.

Gears:
  • TV - Sharp Aquos 37" LCD (LC-37BX5M) / from Western Marketing Megamall
  • AVR - Yamaha RX-V659 / from SGT
  • Speakers - Wharedale Diamond 9 (9.1/9CS/9DFS/SW150) / 9.1 from jeckjeck, others from SGT
  • DVD - Pioneer DV-696AV / from Ambassador Shangrila
  • Karaoke - Megabox MTC-2200 / from Ambassador Park Square
  • VHS - JVC HR-J7005UM / from SM Appliance Center Megamall
  • CDP - Aiwa DX-D10 (Transport only) / from cire2007
  • TV Tuner - Sony ST-92TV / from AEL
  • Tape Deck - Technics RS-TR575 / surplus from pier
  • Theater seats - bought from jairus, then did restoration and fabrication of the base

All of my 2nd floor outlets (bedrooms included) are centrally regulated by a 3000VA servo-type voltage regulator, beside the house mains.  I'm still contemplating on buying a separate UPS just for my precious Aquos.  Your opinions will be appreciated.

Here's some pictures of my 7.1 Home Theater...

next upgrades?  hmmm...
  • more R1 DVDs
  • 42" plasma?  Kahit EDTV lang, mas prefer ko over LCD.
  • more powerful AVR?  I came from an Onkyo 595, and I really feel that the Yammy 695 is a "downgrade" with sound quality.  Sana Onkyo 7.1 or Denon 7.1 receiver, with video up-conversion/pass-through.
  • subwoofer upgrade!  bitin na bitin ako sa SW150!  Sana manalo ako lotto, para may pambili ako ng Velo...  :-\
  • BS to FS.  but not before an AVR upgrade.
  • HTPC, or PC rig with wireless kb-mouse.  gusto ko makapag-surf on my HT, and be able to work as well, using my 37" LCD.
  • and more R1 DVDs  ;D

Congrats!

I've seen that Aquos in a showroom demo, and it was pretty impressive.

Those seats must be very interesting conversation pieces, no?

Your TV and AVR are already very good, so if you're going to upgrade, speakers na lang --- try floorstanders pag nagsawa ka na sa bookshelf.

Congrats din sa dami ng DVD titles mo!  Pero mas gusto kong nasa separate room ang DVDs ko.  Ayoko maglagay ng DVDs sa viewing area, baka mahiram pa ng mga bisita, e.  ;D

Yes they are!  I think they even catch more attention than my LCD or DVD collection.  My boss was very impressed, when we had our house blessing.

Your TV and AVR are already very good, so if you're going to upgrade, speakers na lang --- try floorstanders pag nagsawa ka na sa bookshelf.

My old setup was an Onkyo 595, in tandem with the Mordaunt Short 5.1 set (Premiere MS 3 series).  Sobrang detalye ang naririnig ko with that setup, I loved it!  When I was building a new house, I wanted to pre-wire it for a 7.1 setup, so I sold my old gear.  Now, with the Yamaha659+Diamond9 setup, kulang na kulang na ang details.  I don't know tuloy who's at fault, kung AVR or kung speakers.

My gauge is my all-time favorite Corrs Unplugged DVD.  When Andrea breaths in when playing her black flute-like instrument, dinig na dinig ko each and every breath she takes (sa old setup ko).  Now when I play that same disc on my new setup, wala na yung breathing sound.

Pati yung Mordaunt Short ko na sub, Premiere 308W, talong talo ang Wharf SW150 ko ngayon.  Down-firing yung 308W, and I remember having to lower the bass down, kasi yumayanig parati yung buong sala ko.  Ngayon, bitin ako sa bass nung SW150.  Parang meron ugong lang, but lacks the punch!  Hanap muna siguro ako ng cheap 2nd hand 308W uli, and do a 7.2 setup.  Kung bitin talaga, then maybe a 12" Velo would be worth considering.  Ang mahal lang.  :'(

Whoa!!  :o :o Ganda ng setup mo pre. I envy the space you have, "Perfect for HT". If I may suggest - rather than prioritize having a good sub, I think it's way much better if you buy a good floorstander muna. I assure you na you will "pass muna" in buying a sub. Your avr's well enough to drive on good floorstander.  ;)

Btw. Sensya na di natuloy deal natin on the tv. Mas prefer kasi ng wifey yung widescreen.  :)

paolorenzo! congrats on the HT setup!

we have almost the same setup except for the fronts, subs and tv (mine is 9.5, Velo VXII and a Regza), so you finally bought a Sharp LCD.  I have been using the HDMI cables I bought from you and it was really great!  As regards for the punch baka kasi mas malaki lang yung room mo ngayon hehehe.. I don't have qualms so far on my Yammy and Wharfes though  ;D ;D ;D

Yes, we go a long way back (~8 years).  Siya ang B.I. kaya nalulong ako sa bisyo na 'to.  ;D  He is the brother of Rene Rivo (Hyperaudio).  You work with Ed now?  You should see his setup!

Thanks JT.  Yeah, the wall size would've been ideal for a PJ.  Pero I needed good ventilation kasi family room, so I maximized the window sizes.  So very bright yung room.  It'll take a lot of effort to dim the family room up, to have a decent PJ setup.

Salamat Emer!  Oo nga, dapat madaan ka nga para makita mo na rin yung finished product na aluminum works from the great AsiaStreak!  Meron lang ako client visitor this month so very busy ako.  Ongoing pa rin yung project mo sa SilverCity?  That's my route to and from the office, so maybe we can have coffee dun sa Starbucks sa baba, one of these days...  Please send my regards to Lib.

hello sir!

thanks for the feedback on the sw 150.  i am looking to replace my subwoofer as well. bumibiiyak sa b&w audio sampler.  I have diamond 9.6's and am quite happy with them, i have an ntry level denon receiver though.  The old receiver which I upgraded from was a yammy, so it could be the receiver?  I have a dido live in concert dvd and enjoy her singing when she plays acoustic guitar on a particular song.  Please let me know what subwoofers you are looking at so I can audition them as well:)

Cheers :)
