01.10.2013

Now here is its current state with the second REL right smack in the middle of the components. Now that both locations for the two REL's are optimized I have been tuning the settings for hours and I think I found the setting that makes me happy. The Strata is set currently at 32Hz while the Q201E is at 26hz.. Both support the 40hz bottom end of my main speakers the Dynaudio Contour 1.8MKIIs very nicely and with startling authority. Kick drum and bass guitars never sounded this good. With the twin REL's the bass digs in a lot deeper and stronger without losing its character and most importantly without smearing the delicate Dynaudio mids and highs. Tried it also with my other suspects the Bohlender Hybrid towers and the small but terrible Castles but I found out that it may take hours of experimenting again to set the crossovers right for those speakers as their low end rolloff is a little bit higher as compared to the 1.8MKII's. for now will keep the settings as it is for the week until I have time to tune it for the other speakers that I have.

Next stop is hunting and fixing the rattles and buzzes in the listening space.

Thanks for visiting  :)

01.11.2013: The new Digital Spinner: Classe CDT-1

All I can say for now is that this Transport is SOLID. The Technics that it replaced is like a lightweight compared to this. Sound wise I haven't tried it yet extensively. Very spartan in the controls and very simple but elegant design. Will roll with the cables in the near future since I want to try out its ST- Glass connector since the EAD D/A pre has it as an input as well.

Thanks for visiting

Net pics...too lazy to take snapshots of the new spinner.

Very nice system Sir! I agree with you on the Rel sub. A little PITA to integrate but once you've dialled it in, seamless integration will make your day! Congrats!

Hello Qguy. Utilizing a High pass filter isn't recommended by REL that's why it's imperative to get the capable low end frequency that the mains can deliver and set the subs to kick in after that hence the ultra low settings at 22 hz so it can be integrated seamlessly to big floorstanders which can go way low already. When the main speakers roll off on the low end then that's when the ultra low settings of the RELs kick in so the handoff frequency is critical. All connections are done via speaker level utilizing their Speak On Neutrik wiring as recommended by the manufacturer so that in REL's theory the subs can assimilate the bass SQ of the parent amp thus the parasite connection method. Lots of REL users avoid using the low level (phono) type since the speed of the sub is compromised and the subs may sound...well detached from the total spectrum and filters can and may degrade the initial signal. By going this route the signal from source to speaker is totally undiluted by filters, processors and such.

Right now when the Dynes are used the settings for the subs are as follows: REL Q201E (center location) is at 38hz while the Strata just kicks the low end at 24hz and down for that extra extension when called for.  You are quite right in saying that medyo lugi for the price of the REL's in relation to what they are doing but based on experience dito ko lang talaga nahanap yung tightness, tonality and speed na hinahanap ko.

The rattle is as you guessed it...ceiling. Need to find a material that will make it stop rattling. Na localize ko na pero attacking the problem is still in the works.

One of the very few reasons why speaker level is good for sub utilization.

I also use Speaker level connection. Earlier, I tried the high pass filter on my sub for 2 channel HT and I was able to play the system louder without fear of breaking the main speakers with low frequency signals, sadly the music experienced was a bit lacking, harsh yung highs and nawala yung midbass.

Same findings. Tried that route before as well with my Velodyne Servo F1200 with the high pass feeding the mains but the end result was disappointing. The REL's do not have a high pass option though so I can't try that route.  It just has the low level phono and the parasite high level hookup. I'd trade the extra SPL for the intact signal integrity any time of the day. Straight from the source if the signal gets to stop over filters, processors etc the tendency is nagiiba ang timpla as they say.

03.03.2013: the return of the Nautilus...
« Reply #144 on: Mar 03, 2013 at 05:55 AM »
Last Christmas season we decided to pack this set up for a couple of months while waiting for the Preamp to get fixed. It took quite a while before we can get everything up and running again. Some changes in the room affected the integration of the B&W subwoofer to the mains so that's a work in progress but its nice to know that everything still works even after a very long hiatus of 4 months.

May I present the return of our straight Rotel - B&W - IXOS system.
