Here come the generics! (Chinese NMT's)
« on: Dec 23, 2008 at 05:21 PM »
Finally saw one with .mkv file support at the 2nd floor of 8 Gilmore Place (bldg with Shakey's).

The RM HDD Media PLayer

The box does not mention .mkv but the manual does.  Also has an SD Card slot and can connect using both SATA and IDE drives.  No network support as of the moment but has a myriad of other ways to connect.  It even comes with its own screwdriver!  Curiously, it can only support 1080i but the manual says that it has upgradeable(?) firmware.  Price is Php 4500.

Package includes:
  • 1 x RM HDD Media Player.
  • 1 x Remote control.
  • 1 x Power Adapter.
  • 1 x AV cable.
  • 1 x YPRPB cable.
  • 1 x OTG converter cable(Connect with U disk, Digital cameras achieve OTG function. USB Mini 5 Pin Male to USB A Female).
  • 1 x USB2.0 cable(USB Mini 5 Pin Male to USB A Male).
  • 1 x screwdriver.
  • 4 x screw.
  • 1 x User manual.
  • 1 x Install CD.

A quick look on google also yields a lot of E-great lookalikes:

I wonder if Raon or Quiapo have a few available?   ;D

Disclaimer:  I am not recommending that you go ahead and buy one now.  Caveat emptor.

Interesting news.  Thanks for keeping us updated about the latest models.

Prices of the RM and the WD media players are too close (RM at ₱4.5k and WD ₱5.8k), considering that the WD is better-built and has the disadvantage of having to pay license fees to HDMI, Dolby, DivX, etc.

Either the RM is too expensive or the WD is too cheap.

It's true that the Egreat is much better.  But the problem is that the Egreat is also a different device.

This thread's title says "Chinese NMTs"; the thread is found under the "NMT" childboard; yet this device is not even an NMT.  The proper term is HDD Media Player.

The very 1st NMT but marketed as a HDD media Player was the Mediagate 32NDAS, because of the NDAS software, it's very efficient and in fact is the very same software being used for the hdd storage tanks.....and possibly the Cheapest ;) ;D

yup i also have that one, purchased last July 2007, kung pede lang sana ma-upgrade ang firmware nito to play MKV's, di na sana ako napabili ng eGreat he he he

The Discovery Channel 720p in AVI format played smoothly. And i was able to play a 1080 by converting MKV to AVI format, yun nga lang tedious and longer mag-render.

What is impressive about the Mediagate is that it's the very 1st media player that upgrades to 1080i via component inputs, furthermore, it's the very 1st Media player to recognize and plays smoothly files on NTFS format. It recognizes Iso and you can preserve your precious original DVDs in it's ISO that plays smoothly and devoid of any optical artifacts found in regular players.

Only misgiving about this player is that it was made prior to the arrival of SATA drives, hence buying and owing one nowadays is impractical since a 320G IDE HDD costs around 4.6K, whereas a 500G SATA costs only 3.1K.

True.  The RM is not an NMT and neither is the the WD (and yet threads about it are listed on the same childboard). :)

The other links on the parent post of this thread are actual NMT's made in China. And they support HDMI and are capable of 1080p.  I anticipate their arrival within the next few months.  This thread could be used as a way to track these devices on our shores, or perhaps to spur some entrepreneurs on pinoydvd to finally bring them in.  8)

OK lang yan.  Konti pa lang kasi ang HDD media players.  I'm sure the mods will make a new childboard for the media players pag marami nang models.

But my point is about comparing Egreat vs. this RM.  There's no question na mas magaling talaga ang Egreat.

Mas maganda kung WD vs. RM, or WD vs. generic media players ----  mas sulit kaya ang generic media player?

The EGreat is, without a doubt, superior to the RM, but at Php 13.5k, medyo mahal siya.

Sana talaga dumating na dito yung mga eGreat wannabe's kasi at cost, it is far cheaper.  US$40 (less than Php 2,000 each!) lang pala to direct from the manufacturing plant kapag volume order.  And yet provides the same functionality (Sigma din yata ang chipset) as its more expensive, branded counterpart. :D

Yung generic na HDD player di pa sulit kasi sobrang mahal pa.  At cost, this is priced at US$30, tapos Php 4,500 ang singil sa gilmore.  Malalim ang taga! :-\

$40 and $30?  Grabe ang mura pala nito!

OK na rin siguro ang ₱4.5k for now.

I'm a businessman myself.  Prices will go down only when buyers are numerous enough to encourage competition among sellers.  As of now, I consider the high markup as a reward for the seller who's willing to take a risk on an item that is not yet popular.

Unfortunately, the CD-R King media players do not,as of yet, support hi-def, not to mention mkv's.

Tingin ko rin talaga bababa pa yung presyo.

Ang problema sa generics, baka hindi maasahan sa firmware updates.

Unlike optical disc formats, hard disc media formats are not subject to strict parameters that standardize the different encodes.  That's why it's impossible to design an HDD media player that will always work flawlessly for all media files.

If a player works flawlessly only on the popular media file types and specs, that would be good enough.  With generics, however, I have a feeling that they will have playback issues even with common file types and specs.

Saw a "Saturn HD Media Player" being sold at PC Options (Gilmore) for Php 5,600.  Didn't get to check it out as there were tons of people at the shop.

in the Abacus store in Greenhills, i saw this brand called Measy.  even tested the unit with the 8G USB drive i bring along with me.  pretty decent video AVI playback.  it's supposedly could play MKV files too but wasn't able to test it because I didn't have any on my flashdrive (and the store didn't have too which kinda sucked).  priced at 5995.  frustrating to look at too because the design of the NMY was pretty darned fugly.
