POSTED: JULY 10, 2009
Being inspired by a lot of home theater designs here, I finally decided to make my own.

Fortunately, there was an old storage room in which I could use, unfortunately it was far from ideal.

The room is roughly 9ft X 10ft X 9ft (WXDXH).

Problems I was facing with the room are:
1) Electrical system in that room was already shorted, and crumbling
2) Ceiling was falling apart
3) Room held over 15 years of items. (cleaning it would be hell  :()
4) Far end wall is almost all louver windows and anodized aluminum.
5) Ugly walls and floor (Can't be helped architects of 40 years ago had bad taste  :()

Before anything, I created a design of what the room would be (more or less) after I fix it up.
I used a nifty program by google to create my initial designs

Scope of Work:
1) Carpet Tiles
2) Relocate door to opposite side of the room (Why? To make it more accessible)
3) Put up new walls to cover the old
4) Fix up the electrical and put in new lighting
5) get new glass for the louver windows
6) board up the back with cork to prevent vibrations on the aluminum
7) install really thick curtains
8) install an aircon

It took roughly 2 months to clear up the room and to kill those ginormous spiders. (I kid you not, they were HUGE  :o)

Update 01:
Electricals were just completed.
1) conduits were installed
2) speaker wires were routed
3) tapped in electrical from other parts of the house to route

POSTED: JULY 15, 2009

Finally completed the wall metal frame.

We have just begun putting up the walls. Walls are made up of High Density Gypsum Boards.
Why Gypsum boards? I would think Gypsum boards should have some acoustic absorption properties since essentially they are high compacted chalk boards.

Well in case I am wrong then I have to put up  bass traps and stuff. But until things are completed we won't know, so stay tuned.

I just love my new door. It's one of those very heavy solid doors :)

Puttying all the new walls have been finished, guess next step would be sanding then finally painting :)

Since the T-runners are up, it's just a matter of time before I can put up the acoustic boards.

In case your wondering what your looking at here, this is actually where the original door was. That door was dead-bolted shut, so theres no way it could be opened from the other side.

Acoustic Board and electrical test

I'll be screwing in a plywood on these brackets, after that I'll probably blu-tack my 9.1s on it.

Metal brackets

Color started with Adobe Red, and later mixed with a little black. I'm trying to achieve a choco brown color. This is only one coat so far and paint still a little wet. Hopefully I get the color I want.

Paint Test

POSTED: JULY 18, 2009

I added a few more hints of black to get the choco brown color I wanted. Apologies for the reflection.

First Coat

Of course since the door is of a different material, shade is a little different from the walls, but not the noticeable.

First Coat - Door

I said it before and I'll say it again, Architecture of 40 years ago sucks. I don't even know why there are gaps under the aluminum wall.

I added metal supports/wood then finally an acoustic board to fill the gap. I'll be painting the acoustic board though the same choco brown as the wall. I know this will reduce it's effects but for this aesthetics first :)

The before and After

I had to sacfice a few of the louver windows but at least less areas for sound to leak out of :)

On the second hole will be putting an acoustic board there :)

New aluminum for aircon support

I bought some blank electrical plates and had a half inch drill bit create a hole right in the middle for the wires to come out of.

Electrical Plates with drilled hole.

Painting of the entire room is complete. BUt I'm honestly till not satisfied until I get the "clean" look I wanted. I'll probably spend a few more days sanding, puttying repainting.

After A LOT of problems with the paint. And after weeks of work finally painting has been completed. Although there are still some problems but not that bad anymore and they'll be covered by the posters I'll be putting up.

Before flooring could be laid out whatever imperfections existed had to be fixed.

Thankfully the only floor problem was an unsightly hole where the old wall use to be. (probably used as a support). If you notice the picture of my door the hole was right under it.

Just a little mixture of white cement then "wala" the hole is gone.

White Cement

After a few hours flooring was complete. I really love the new floor, it's something different. WHen light it directly shone on it it has these small sparkles similar to what you see on the beach.

It does really mimic how the mineral sardonyx looks like. And I feel it gives great contrast to the ceiling.

On this shot you can see the small sparkles.

bakit walang front view yung babae?  :-*

seriously though, looks like a good project.

i would advise though that you should add the acoustic treatment now, rather than later.
(your room is almost a cube)

my recommendations would be to treat the whole front wall and the walls below the windows (to simulate a longer room) and all the corners

Very true. Cube is not good but the Audyssey feature of the Denon 1909 should help. Nonetheless, there will likely be problems sa bass response.

Thanks Mike,

I can send you a pic of the girl haha  :D

Yea definitely, I knew that the room was very close to a cube and would cause some acoustic issues. But once I install the new walls and ceiling this make change the shape a bit. But yea acoustic treatment would be my next step  :).

great project!

congrats!

Thanks watch out, more to come :)

congrats on the project! Keep us updated  :)

Yea saw this as a potential problem, but once the new walls and ceiling are up the shape of the room should change. Not that much but at lease a little bit farther than a cube :)

Part of my update today is while after renovating the room, I went out to find floor tiles. Who knew that that would be so difficult, due to so many choices. :)

Also, it's amazing how long pesticides last. After cutting open the wall to make way for my new door there was a strong smell of pesticide. Being that the case, pesticide was sprayed within the walls over 40 years ago. Thats some strong stuff.

I never knew it would take a loooong time to look for acoustic boards and floor tiles.

Its not what I imagined but finally I was able to choose the boards and tiles I want.

If it's anything I've learned to get the good quality stuff you can't just go to any hardware store. YOu really have to go to those that really distribute these things.

Floor Tiles (Code: Sardonyx)

You can really tell that this is good quality stuff. It is much thicker than the stuff you buy from hardware places. Not to mention the material feels really different.

The supplier was kind enough to cut me a piece measuring 10 ft by 11 ft, so I'll just have to trim it to fit the room. (NO SEAMS :))

Floor Tiles - Close Up (Code: Sardonyx)

One other thing I like about this is that it's actually not flat. Since the tile really tried to mimic an uncut Sardonyx it really had a lot of roughness and has a "stone" like feel to it.

I know its very minimal but I'm sure this should diffuse the sound. I know it's not that much but at least better than have a smooth reflective surface.

Acoustic Board - Sample 01

Acoustic Board - Sample 02

I never really appreciated Acoustic Boards, I thought they were all the same. But until I was handed this sample, I could really feel and see the significant difference between those bulk made in china boards.

These boards are much denser, thicker and harder. And it seems to absorb sound a whole lot better.
Also don't quote me on this but seems to be much more resilient to being wet.

Acoustic Board - Close Up

Of course these are much more expensive (thankfully not that much) than the usual box stuff that you can get. But sometimes quality makes the extra cost worth it.

Hi hubes,

I got the tiles and the board from Spurway Enterprises. I would suggest you go to their main office to check all their products :). They have an extremely wide range of floor tiles and acoustic boards. (vinyl, carpet, seamless, roll-on, welded, sound proofing and etc.)

Actually they specilialized in home theater's as well. But I didn't get their home theater solution because I felt though the treatment to be done on my floor (Rookwool, absorption foam, honeycomb then sound absorbing flooring) is way to much. But you might want to check that out since, that's suppose  to be the proper way to do so.

Their main office is located at 21 5th street brngy mariana new manila quezon city. Number is 415-5911 to 12

I will definitely keep an eye on this. That floor tile looks really cool! Congrats in advance!  8)

Thanks frootloops, yea I also found the flooring to be so cool. I can't wait for this to be completed :)

Ganda ng pang flooring mo chief. Anu dimension nun? saka magkano damage?  ;)

This type of flooring comes actually in a large roll around 50 sq meters :) So the distributor asked me exactly how many meters i needed. Sp he cut out and gave me one big piece exactly to the size of my room. (Beauty of it is no seam lines on the floor since it's just one piece).

Damage is a lot haha :) price of this flooring was a per square meter pricing. The distributor originally gave it to me around 1300 / sq meter. thankfully I met their boss and stuff and he gave it to me less than 1000.

Btw, the brand of the floor is Gerflor. It's a huge flooring company which sells worldwide.

How thick is that sardonyx?

It seems to be around 2 - 3 mm but I think they can add a sort of foam layer that makes it 3 or 4 inches thick. (I think that's overkill though :P)

Yep, It is expensive, but well worthit. I think even if it was a large area. This is the floor anyway. I doubt that you'll be changing it right away :) So it's a worthwhile investment :) Yup also visit thier place they have way to much stuff to describe here :) You might find something else :) I actually wasn't able to see all their stuff. THere is just to many.

Hi Mike, thanks for the advise. I actually was planning to put fiberglass between the metal frames. but due to a lot of complaints, (ugh) about health issues I had no choice but to scratch that plan. So I moved to the next alternative I can think of..... Kinematics and Physics :P. Basically, I looked for "vibration spots" on the metal frame and connected them to the existing wall with a small piece of metal. This way not only do I reinforce the metal frame (no more squeaking), I also "transfer" the vibrations to the wooden wall. I know the existing walls have some sort of insulation.

Metal support of the metal frame to the existing wall.

For the roof, I'll just be using T-runners and Hangers to suspend the acoustic boards. Ill probably put some soft material (fabrics) between the acoustic boards and the old ceiling.

Thanks :) actually not really. I have a lot of original ideas that had to be changed from the original. And some ideas come along the way :) There are just that are trial and error. :)

Actually even though a lot has been planned out and proceeding well, I'm still very anxious since this is my first HT:) I hope everything turns out good in the end :P
